Press Release: Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government and District of Ucluelet Renew Protocol Agreement

Ucluelet, B.C. —

The District of Ucluelet and the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government are pleased to announce the renewal of a long-standing protocol agreement between the two governments.

This agreement reaffirms the common values and shared vision for the Ucluelet peninsula.

Given the passage of time, changes in the relationship between the two governments, and the evolving legislative and policy context in British Columbia, it was timely to review and update the agreement (the original was established in 2014).

The renewed protocol provides an updated framework for a positive working relationship between the two governments— and expands that framework to better reflect the current relationship. It includes: a new preamble and purpose, updated guiding principles and shared values and, more specific commitments to working together.

“Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ has always valued strong relationships with our neighbours” said President Charles McCarthy.  “We have built a strong relationship with the District of Ucluelet over the years, and renewing this agreement reflects our shared commitment to continuing that work and building a strong future together.”

“This renewed protocol strengthens the continued relationship between Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ First Nation and the District of Ucluelet” said Mayor Marilyn McEwen. “Both governments identified key areas where the existing protocol could be strengthened, and we look forward to working together for years to come. Our communities thrive when we work together and we are pleased to have such a great partner in the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ.”

The District of Ucluelet is proud of our continued relationship with the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government and the ongoing efforts from both governments to reinforce our shared values and commitment to the residents of the Ucluelet peninsula.
