Press Release: Wildlife Safety Response Officer Begins Role as Bylaw Enforcement Officer 

Ucluelet, B.C. —

Cameron McKieve has wrapped up his role as Ucluelet’s Wildlife Safety Response Officer (WSRO). Over the summer he helped support the work of conservation officers to enhance public safety and reduce human-wildlife conflicts. This was a joint initiative whereby the WSRO is employed by the BC Conservation Officer Service and funded by the District of Ucluelet for a four-month period.

Cameron’s time was spent addressing businesses and residents in non-compliance of municipal and provincial regulations regarding wildlife attractants. As well as responding to any human wildlife conflict events that occurred in the area.

There was a 93.3% decrease in the number of black bear reports compared to last summer.

In general, the Bylaw Enforcement Officer’s mandate is to obtain and enforce general compliance with the provisions of the bylaws relating to the health, safety and welfare of the community.
