Highway 4 Closed - Alternate Route Now Available for Essential Traffic

The Cameron Bluffs wildfire is currently burning near Cameron lake affecting Highway 4 in both directions between Cathedral Grove/MacMillan Provincial Park and Koen Rd for 7.0 km (Cathedral Grove). Due to the wildfire, Highway 4 is currently closed; anticipated to last until the Ministry of Transportation (MOTI) can ensure safe travel along the corridor.

A detour has now been established, although drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid using the detour route unless essential travel is required. We recommend residents reschedule any out-of-town appointments/ travel plans to the other side of the island at this time. Visitors to the region are encouraged to delay their departure from the West Coast, if possible, as the detour route is expected to experience high traffic volume.

The detour will route traffic from Port Alberni through to Lake Cowichan via Bamfield using forest-service and privately owned industrial roads and will extend travel by approximately 4 hours. The gravel detour route has narrow sections, sharp curves, single-lane bridges, and challenging terrain. There is no cell service, gas stations or washroom facilities on the detour route, and limited emergency support.

As an alternative route has now been established, essential goods are making their way to the West Coast. Food and fuel will constantly be available while the detour remains in place. We encourage residents and visitors to limit purchases to what you need.
