The lovely seaside village of Ucluelet perched at the tip of a peninsula on the edge of Barkley Sound, is framed on three sides by the Pacific Ocean. The spectacular beauty and pristine nature of Vancouver Island’s west coast surrounds Ucluelet with the wild Pacific Ocean on the west and the calm expansive harbor on the east. With a population averaging approximately 1800, Ucluelet is known for its friendly atmosphere and quaint ambiance.
This beautiful region is world-renowned for its temperate rainforests thick with old-growth cedars, fir and hemlock. In addition, the Wild Pacific Trail, Ucluelet Aquarium and 100-year-old Amphitrite lighthouse in Ucluelet have become a draw for many tourists. The richest fishing grounds on the Pacific coast are at Ucluelet and Tofino’s doorstep and one of the biggest draws to the area is the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve with beaches that stretch for miles where year-round surfing is possible.
From February to April each year, the whales return from their winter migration and an estimated 20,000 gray whales as well as countless humpback whales pass through the area on their way to the feeding grounds of the Bering Sea. Some of these amazing cetaceans choose to stay all summer in Barkley or Clayoquot Sound and occasionally transient orcas also visit the area. Eagles, seals and sea lions are abundant and can often be seen in the harbour; deer wander peacefully through town; and even black bears, cougars and wolves are occasionally spotted in the area. The entire Pacific Rim is a bird watcher’s paradise and both hikers and kayakers are quite simply in heaven.
Culture and community events are plentiful throughout the year; highlights include the annual “Edge to Edge” marathon in June and the Pacific Rim Summer Festival featuring chamber music and multi-cultural concerts at a variety of venues. In July, Ucluelet hosts “Ukee Days”, a fun-filled weekend for the whole family kicked off by a community salmon bake and parade followed by a weekend of fun and games including logger sports and more.
Fair warning! A visit to the Pacific Rim will be remembered for a lifetime and may result in a desire to make it your permanent home or, at the very least, your home-away-from-home.
