Scotch Broom: Community Bin & Curbside Pick Up
Cut Broom in Bloom – Help Protect Ucluelet’s Natural Areas
It’s that time of year again—Scotch broom is in bloom, and now is the best time to remove it!
🌼 Why Now?
Spring is when Scotch broom is most vulnerable. While in bloom, the plant’s energy is concentrated above ground. Cutting it at or just below ground level during this time means the roots, already weakened by drought, will die off in the summer heat. There's no need to pull out the roots, which can actually disturb the soil and trigger seed growth.
🌿 How to Cut Properly
- Identify the main stem (trunk) of the plant and cut it at or below ground level.
- Avoid cutting branches—find the base. Clearing grass around the base may help.
- Cutting low prevents regrowth from hidden buds near the base.
🚫 Do Not Pull Broom Outside of March–May
Pulling broom disturbs the soil, allowing dormant seeds to sprout. To limit regrowth, keep soil intact. Cut the plant, press the soil down, and maintain existing ground cover.
📍 Drop-Off Location
You can drop off your cut broom at the Ucluelet Community Centre parking lot (500 Matterson Drive). A disposal bin will be available until May 23, 2025.
