District of Ucluelet Appoints New Board Members for Barkley Community Forest
Ucluelet, BC – At the June 27th Annual General Meeting of the Barkley Community Forest Corporation, the District of Ucluelet appointed two new representatives to the board of directors. The District is pleased to announce that Denise Stys-Norman and Marlene Lagoa will be joining existing board member Dario Corlazzoli to represent the District.
"The District would like to thank our founding directors Geoff Lyons and Zolie Schafer for their years of dedication to the community forest. Their work is now greatly benefiting our community," said Ucluelet Mayor Dianne St. Jacques. "Our new board is a diverse group that we are excited to have steward our community forest."
The community forest is a corporate partnership between the Toquaht Nation and the District of Ucluelet. After many years of dedicated commitment to the development of the Barkley Community Forest, the first harvesting began in 2017. The Corporation worked with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations to identify suitable lands that could be managed sustainably for the long-term benefit of both communities.
On June 27th, each partner received a second $500,000 dividend, bringing the total 2018 income to $1 million. Over 180 residents recently completed a District survey that asked how these funds could best benefit the community. The results of that survey will be presented to Council this summer.
