Extreme Wave Hazard Advisory Issued for the Pacific Rim Region

UCLUELET-TOFINO, B.C., January 16, 2018 – Parks Canada has issued an extreme wave hazard advisory for the Pacific Rim region including Ucluelet, Tofino and Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

The public is being warned to use extreme caution on beaches, shorelines, docks and marinas, and coastal waters from Thursday, January 18th to Saturday January 20th, 2018. These areas should be avoided during major storms. If you are near the water, it is important to be ‘CoastSmart’ by staying above the high tide and off large exposed rocks.

During this time period, large ocean swells are predicted to be upwards of 9 metres. High tides of up to 3.6 metres occurring mid-day are predicted to compound the wave hazard. These conditions could result in the following potential hazardous conditions:

  • Shoreline flooding and flooded beaches, particularly during high-tides;

  • Large waves breaking high up on the shore;

  • Extremely hazardous surf conditions; and

  • Floating logs.

    The most dangerous period of the day is likely to be at high tide from mid-morning to mid-afternoon.

In addition, ‘Storm’ force winds of 48 to 63 knots are occurring or expected to occur in this marine area. Please refer to the latest marine forecasts for further details and continue to monitor the situation through Canadian Coast Guard radio or Weatheradio stations.

People interested in viewing the storm are advised to use the following safer locations:

  • Kwisitis Visitor Centre’s Observation Deck at Wickaninnish Beach in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

  • Florencia Bay Lookout in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

Depending of the severity of the storm, select beach parking lots, beach areas, and trails in the region may be temporarily closed to protect public safety. Please respect all closures, follow directions on associated postings, and watch for updated statements. Thank you for using extreme caution during this storm event.

CoastSmart tips:

  • Avoid trails and beaches during storm events

  • Stay away from exposed shorelines and stay off rocks

  • Unexpected waves can suddenly flood shorelines

  • Large waves can surge above the tide line

  • High tides and waves can roll logs
