Breakwater Catamarans Now at Small Craft Harbour
October 18, 2016
Ucluelet, BC --- The District of Ucluelet is currently in the midst of receiving improvements to Small Craft Harbour in the way of two new catamarans, which serve as breakwaters for the Harbour. This project was initiated by the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), who are the owners of the facility and from who the District of Ucluelet is the lessee and operator.
The contractors retained by DFO have now completed the installation of the two new catamarans as of October 12, 2016. Dock B has also been moved to its new location so, at this time, there is no pedestrian access to the catamarans. The Small Craft Harbour branch of DFO is currently in the planning phase to determine the type of ramp that will be installed to cover the “gap” between the catamarans and Dock B to allow pedestrian access. Once the planning is complete, the latest anticipated completion date for the installation of the ramp is set for March 2017.
The catamarans will serve to better protect the Outer Basin / Japanese Dock from strong winds or waves. They are wide and large enough for commercial or recreational fishers to use to work on their nets and similar equipment. Final placement of the catamarans has also created an increase in available moorage space in the harbour.
